Free tool · tax year 2026 · updated August 31, 2026
Will a client send you a 1099 for 2026?
The federal floor moved from $600 to $2,000 for work paid in 2026. Your state may not have moved with it. Two inputs and you will know which forms to expect in January 2027.
One thing this tool will never tell you: what you owe. It answers whether a payer has to issue a form. Nothing here is tax advice — see the longer explanation.

Will a 1099 show up for this job?
Two inputs · yellow = you type
This tells you whether a payer has to mail you a form. It is not a calculation of tax owed, and it is not tax advice. One client at a time — the floor is per payer, not per year.
Federal 1099-NEC: not expected
$1,400 is below the $2,000 federal floor for payments made in 2026, so this payer generally does not have to issue one. Before 2026 the floor was $600.
State form: pick a state
Pick a state to see whether it kept a lower floor of its own.
Still taxable: yes
Whether or not a form arrives, money you were paid for work is reportable on Schedule C. Self-employment tax filing starts at $400 of net earnings. The form is a payer document, not a tax bill.

The long version: why 18.8 million fewer forms are going out for 2026, what still belongs on Schedule C, and how to reconstruct a year of jobs when nothing arrived in the mail.
